18)As the catalyst is loaded, catalyst dust or fines are released into the atmosphere of the reactor. This can create a dust cloud inside the reactor, which can reduce visibility to the point where it is difficult to work. In addition, the catalyst fines will settle on the catalyst, which can cause increased pressure drop during operation. To prevent this, a vacuum hose (usually 3-6 in.) is placed in the reactor to remove the dust. The hose should be suspended in the bed being loaded, above personnel working in the bed. The dust control system should have a collection/ separatorto catch the catalyst dust before it enters the vacuum system. Never connect the vacuum hose to the bottom reactor nozzle; fines will be pulled through the catalyst which can cause pressure drop buildup during the run.
