Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh with 16 districts in the year 2000. Raipur, being its capital city, is the centre of all trade, economy and administration. THE POWER SECTOR IN CHHATTISGARH

Chhattisgarh is an important hub for production of electrical power in India. Korba district is known as the power capital of the country. By August 2022, Chhattisgarh had a total power generation capacity of 13,439.52 MW with 8,805.79 MW under private utilities, 1,971.05 MW under state utilities and 2,662.68 MW under central utilities. It is a power surplus state and can provide cheap electricity to its industrial hubs.

NATURAL RESOURCES IN CHHATTISGARH

It is one of the richest states in mineral wealth, including diamonds, and the combined exports of aluminium, steel, iron ore and its products reached US$ 1,629.76 million in the FY22. It produces about 15% of the total steel production in the country. Considerable reserves of Bauxite, Limestone and Quartzite make it an ideal location for low cost production of end products like cement and aluminium. It contributes 23% coal, 20% iron ore and 37% dolomite of the total production in the country.

THE RICE BOWL OF THE COUNTRY

The state’s total merchandise exports comprises non-basmati rice that contributes around 25.5%. Chhattisgarh is thus known as ‘Dhaan Ka Katora’ or ‘Rice Bowl’ for its production of Rice, and agriculture accounts for about 80% of the workforce here. The most valuable hardwoods that grow in Chhattisgarh are sal and teak, besides tendu leaves used in making Beedi and resins from the Salai tree that are used in making incenses and medicines. Bamboo is abundant there and used in multiple industries.

TRANSPORT AND CONNECTIVITY

Chhattisgarh is well-connected with excellent means of transport – by roads, railways and air. The Chhattisgarh Road Development Corporation Limited (CRDCL) has been taking on non-stop works related to Road, Bridges, Under-Passes and ROBs to improve road networks in the state, be it new construction, widening, improvement, strengthening, upgradation of state highways or bridges. CRDCL promotes Private Sector Participation in the Highway sector at the state level by acting as a nodal organisation. 

Bilaspur, being the zonal headquarters of South East Central Railway of Central Railways, has a wide network of rail lines centred around the city. 

Progress is underway based on an MoU signed  by the Chhattisgarh Government with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to boost regional air connectivity within the state.

INDUSTRIAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE STATE

Chhattisgarh is making substantial investments in this sector. The CSIDC (Chhattisgarh State Industrial Development Corporation) has set up industrial growth centres, seven industrial parks and three IIDC (Integrated Infrastructure Development Centres). It has a notified SEZ in Rajnandgaon and two more SEZs have been formally approved.

CHHATTISGARH ECONOMY 

Chhattisgarh economy is one of the fastest growing in the country. Its GSDP for the year 2022-23 is projected to be ₹4,38,478 crore, which is a growth of 9.6% over the previous year. Additionally, the state is likely to generate a revenue surplus of ₹702 crore in the year 2022-23. The economy majorly is dependent on agriculture, manufacturing and services sector, with the services sector accounting for 38%.
