Background Noncommunicable Diseases (ncds) – Especially Cardiovascular Diseases (cvds), Cancer, Diabetes And Chronic Respiratory Diseases (crds) – Are The Leading Cause Of Death Globally And Are Responsible For 71% Of Deaths Worldwide. In The Western Pacific Region (wpr), Ncds Account For 86% Of Deaths, Based On 2016 Estimation. These Ncds Share Modifiable Behavioral Risk Factors Such As Tobacco Use, Unhealthy Diet, Lack Of Physical Activity And Harmful Use Of Alcohol, Which Lead To Four Metabolic/physiologic Changes – Raised Blood Pressure, Overweight And Obesity, Raised Blood Glucose And Raised Cholesterol. Irrespective Of The Availability Of The Best Buy Interventions And Ongoing Ncd Activities; Data Shows The Rate Of Decline In Premature Deaths From Ncds Globally And The Region Is Insufficient To Achieve The Sustainable Development Goal (sdg) Target 3.4. The Lancet Report Ncd Countdown 2020 Highlights That Only Three Countries In The Region Are On Track To Reach Sdg 3.4 By 2030; Two Have Worsened; While The Rest Of The Countries Are Reducing, But Off Track To Achieve The Sdg Target. The Prevalence Of Obesity Amongst 5-19 Years In The Region Have Increased By 43% From 2010 To 2016 And More Than 50% Of Adult Women In Ten Out Of 27 Countries In The Region Are Obese. Tobacco Use Prevalence Is Declining In The Region, But The Current Projection Does Not Allow The Region To Achieve The Global Target Of A 30% Reduction By 2030. The Percentage Of Alcohol Drinkers In The Region Has Increased From 51.5% In 2000 To 53.8% In 2016. The Greatest Effects Of These Risk Factors Fall Increasingly On Low- And Middle-income Countries, Mirroring The Underlying Socioeconomic Determinants. Unless The Ncd Epidemic Is Aggressively Confronted In The Most Heavily Affected Countries And Communities, The Mounting Impact Of Ncds Will Continue. Prevention Through Risk Factor Reduction, Screening, Early Diagnosis And Treatment Of Ncds, As Well As Palliative Care, Are Key Components Of The Response To Ncds, And Action Is More Urgent Now Than Ever Before.
