Tenders are invited for Provision of Laboratory / testing services for the characterization of samples of shwebo paw san rice Paw san rice variety is grown in Shwebo area on an estimated surface of more than 150,000 ha. Shwebo Pawsan rice enjoys a strong reputation of quality on Myanmar domestic market, in particular in Yangon. It is considered as better than the same variety grown in other production region (Ayeyarwady delta, notably) and benefit of a premium price for this reason. Some millers or packagers have started to misuse Shwebo name to benefit from this premium price, putting the reputation and consumers’ trust at risk. This justifies the motivation for stakeholders to register Shwebo Pawsan as a protected Geographical Indication. Shwe Bo Paw San Farmers, Millers and Traders Association The Shwe Bo Paw San Farmers, Millers and Traders Association (SPFMTA) was formed in 2015 but was officially recognized in 2018. This was initiated with the purpose of registering a GI after initial information conducted in April 2015 by the DIP (Initially the name was different). The organisation itself grew out of pre-existing milling associations, present in each township and regrouped in a national rice millers’ association. Despite the fact that it was initiated by rice millers, the Association has the intention (and has already started) to include other stakeholders in the value chain, namely the seed producers, the farmers and the post milling traders. Each of these groups are recognised and have sub-committees within the overall association (it seems that the aggregators are not represented)
