About Kerala Public Works Department
Kerala, one of the 29 states of India, is run by the state government headed by the chief minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan. PWD, or the Public Works Department of Kerala, is headed by the Minister of Public Works and Tourism, Adv. P. A. Mohamed Riyas.
This department is responsible for the designing, planning and execution of public works of the Government of Kerala. Works related to National Highway, Roads, Buildings and Bridges fall under this category.
Earlier, Irrigation was a part of Kerala PWD, but from the 1st of April 1990, it was bifurcated, and a separate department of Irrigation was formed.
Kerala PWD is divided into the following 10 wings for better administration:
1. Administration Wing - Headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, deals with the general administrative and HR management related to the whole of Kerala PWD.
2. Roads Wing - Responsible for all the State Highways and Major District Roads
3. Buildings Wing - Responsible for electrification and electronic works as well as the water supply of all the public buildings in the state.
4. National Highway Wing - Established for the maintenance of all the 11 National Highways in Kerala.
5. Design Wing - Formed to deal with design, R&D, investigation and quality check of all the infrastructure projects by the state government.
6. Bridges Wing - Responsible for the construction as well as upkeep of various bridges in the state of Kerala
7. Road Maintenance - This wing deals with all the maintenance related works of the state roads of Kerala.
8. Architectural Wing - Formed to look after all the architectural designs for the state buildings.
9. Projects Wing - Looks after the externally aided and other specialized projects.
10. KRFB PMU - Looks after the projects that are funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board.
