Bihar is the 3rd most populous state in the country and records the youngest population compared to other states. Historically, Bihar was a centre of power, learning and culture. To keep pace with new India, the Bihar Government has changed its approach towards development of the state in the past few years. The State Government along with the Central Government are working together to build a world-class infrastructure system throughout the region.

Positive growth in Bihar economy
Bihar economy has seen a strong recovery in 2021-22 as the Gross State Domestic Product at constant prices recorded a robust growth of 10.98%, as against the national growth of 8.68% in the same year. Post 2015, Bihar has been showing better growth rate as compared to the rest of the country. In fact, this change can be attributed to a decade back to 2005-06 when the economy started showing a resurgence. Notwithstanding the fluctuating economy and issues like high unemployment, Bihar provides an opportunity to SMEs and MSMEs to prosper and be part of the growth story in Bihar.
Agriculture as the foundation for economic growth
This is the sector that employs 80% of the state’s population. Bihar is not only known for paddy and wheat crops, it also focuses a lot on fruit and vegetable production. It provides ample opportunity for associated industries to prosper in related industries like refrigeration, transportation, food processing etc. In fact, food processing, milk products, sugar (Bihar exported US $6.35 million worth of sugar in FY22), leather and textile manufacturing and healthcare are some of the fast-growing industries associated with agriculture. The state has now planned initiatives and projects for the development of other sectors like children’s education and tourism, information technology and renewable energy.
Bihar Budget 2022-23
The Budget of Bihar has been extremely promising with major focus areas being well-carved out and the budget allocation and incentives being oriented accordingly. ₹11,376 crore (US$ 1.48 billion) has been allocated for the power department, ₹8,365 crore (US $1.09 billion) towards surface communication (roads and bridges), ₹7,133 crore (US $932 million) towards urban development, ₹40,828 crore (US $5.33 billion) towards education, sports, art and cultural sectors, ₹7,712 crore (US $1 billion) towards agriculture associated activities and an allocation of ₹15,898 crore (US $2.07 billion) on health and family welfare.
IT/ITeS – Future of growth and prosperity!
Bihar with its educated youth and economical labour, poses a clear advantage in this sector. Taking a cue from developed states like Telangana and Tamil Nadu, Bihar is now convinced that the growth in the IT/ITeS sector would propel further growth in the fields of agriculture, education, healthcare, rural development, telecommunication, energy, tourism, etc. The State Government has recently notified land for two IT Parks at Bihta (near Patna) and Rajgir to lay the foundation for a future in the IT sector.
Roads, bridges and railways are fueling the economy!
The central government and state government are presently working hand in hand to improve the infrastructure in the state. This is likely to borne fruit in a few years and help in the growth story of Bihar. Some of the projects in the pipeline that can found via eProc Bihar portal are:
