Formation history of Coal India Limited 

Coal India Limited (CIL) is a state owned coal mining corporation which was formed in November of 1975. Starting with a modest production of 79 Million Tonnes (MTs) in the year of its inception; today CIL is the single largest coal producer in the world. It is also one of the largest corporate employers having a manpower of 248,550 (as of April, 2022). Coal India operates through its subsidiaries in 84 mining areas that are spread over 8 Indian states. Coal India Limited has 318 mines (as of 1st April 2022) of which 141 are underground, 158 are opencast, and 19 mixed mines. Coal India Limited also manages other establishments like workshops, hospitals, and more. Presently CIL has 21 training Institutes and around 76 Vocational Training Centres. The largest corporate training institute of India – Indian Institute of Coal Management (IICM) is a state-of-the-art Management Training ‘Centre of Excellence’ operates under CIL. There are 116 ongoing Mining projects of Coal India, having 915.36 MTY annual capacity that have contributed 456.28 MT in 2021-22. Apart from this, there are 161 completed mining projects with an annual capacity of 379.25 MTY. CIL Produces following products from its coal mining: Coking Coal, Semi coking coal, Non Coking Coal, Beneficiated coal, Cil Coke / LTC Coke, Coal Fines/ Coke Fines and Tar/ Heavy Oil/ Light Oil/ Soft Pitch
