Jammu and Kashmir has entered a new dawn of development after the abrogation of article 370 in October 2019. The Union Territory of J&K and the centre is now committed to achieve new milestones with respect to its growth and development.
What makes J&K special?
Jammu and Kashmir is located in India’s northern part and is a global tourist destination. Aside from traditional recreational tourism, a vast scope exists for pilgrimage, spiritual, adventure and health tourism. With varied agro-climatic conditions, floriculture, food processing and agro-based industries thrive in the UT. The traditional handicraft and cottage industry includes carpet weaving, silks, shawls, basketry, pottery, copper, silverware, papier mâché and walnut wood. Thus, J&K offers boundless business and investment opportunities across all sectors for SMEs and MSMEs.
Economic Growth in J&K
There are investments being made for the economic development of Jammu & Kashmir, which has opened doors to new investors and business houses. In 2022, it was announced that 25 new national highway projects are being sanctioned to be built at an estimated cost of ₹11,721 crore and 168 MoUs have been signed amounting to ₹13,600 crore.
These are some of the major initiatives taken by the government to promote J&K as an investment destination:

- In March 2022, the UAE pledged to invest ₹ 3000 crores in J&K
- The industrial policy of J&K offers attractive incentives along with a single window clearance mechanism, wherein land is allotted at concessional rates in industrial areas on lease for 90 years
- The NHIDCL ( National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation) is developing five tunnels in the UT at a cost of 3.42 million USD. The tunnels will have an all weather access and will all be completed by 2024
- In FY23, a total of 543 projects will be sanctioned at a cost of ₹ 2237 crore with funding from NABARD
- To reduce traffic in Srinagar and Jammu, an elevated light metro rail system is expected to be rolled out by 2022-23 and is likely to be completed by 2026
