PWD is also known as the Public Works Department. It has its presence all over India, where it handles the construction of complex projects even in severe terrain conditions. The organisation plays a major role when it comes to planning, execution, maintenance, and standardisation of the construction environment in India. It also acts as a government department when the time comes to implement policies for sustainable development and bring transparency to the administration system.

Additionally, PWD makes an effort to educate its clients about green buildings while developing rules and regulations around the same. PWD majorly carry out projects such as - roads, bridges, buildings, complicated structures like auditoriums, stadiums, bunkers, laboratories, border fencing, border roads (hill roads) etc. The functions PWD handle are typically around - planning, designing, construction and management of Central Government non-residential infrastructures, other than those for Atomic Energy, Defense Services, Railways, All India Radio, Doordarshan and International and National Airports.

Today PWD is entrusted by the central government to do work on all the civil projects which are funded by the centre. The PWD is led by the PWD Secretary to the Government of India, who is a Consultant Engineer and advisor to Deputy Secretaries who are responsible for each individual branch.
