HPCL is the subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation that falls under the ownership of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of the Government of India, with the headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The parent company of HPCL is ONGC, which owns a majority stake in the company.HPCL was founded in 1974 after the takeover and merger of Esso Standard and Lube India Limited. The company operates through two major refineries that produce a wide range of petroleum fuels and specialities, one is in Mumbai (West Coast), having a 7.5 million tonnes per year capacity, and the other is in Visakhapatnam (East Coast), having a capacity of generating 8.3 million tonnes per year. There are a number of other refineries being set up by HPCL.The petroleum company also owns and manages the biggest lubricant refinery in India that produces lube base oils that meet international standards, with a capacity of 335 TMT. The marketing network of HPCL is made up of 21 zonal offices in major cities, and 128 regional offices backed by a supply and distribution infrastructure made up of aviation service facilities, terminals, lube filling plants, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bottling plants, inland relay depots, retail outlets (petrol pumps) and lube, LPG distributorships.
