PWD is also known as the Public Works Department. It has its presence all over India, where it handles the construction of complex projects even in severe terrain conditions. The organization plays a major role when it comes to planning, execution, maintenance, and standardization of the construction environment in India. It also acts as a government department when the time comes to implement policies for sustainable development and bring transparency to the administration system.

Initially, the works relating to irrigation, roads, and bridges, in addition to the construction and support of public buildings, were entrusted to the Maharashtra PWD department. In the year 1960, a different "Territory of Maharashtra" appeared, and from there on, this department, by a method of reorganization isolated into two particular departments, namely - the Irrigation Department and Building and Communication Department. In the year 1980, the lodging capacity was cared for by one more discrete department, and the existing Public Works Department was established.
