Ladakh was established as a union territory of India on 31 October 2019, incidental to which the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act came into existence effect of it was, it became a part of the Jammu and Kashmir state.Ladakh is the largest and the second least populous union territory of India. It also constitutes a part of Kashmir region and has been a topic of dispute between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947.Leh is the largest town in Ladakh, followed by Kargil, each of which headquarters a district. The Leh district has three river valleys namely the Indus, Shyok and Nubra. And the Kargil district also has three river valleys namely the Suru, Dras and Zanskar. The religious groups in this region are Muslims (mainly Shia) (46%), Buddhists (mainly Tibetan Buddhists) (40%), Hindus (12%) and others (2%).The culture and history of Ladakh is somewhat similar to that of Tibet. Also, it is one of the most sparsely populated regions in India.The area covered is 59,146 km2 (22,836 sq m). And, the population is 274,289 making a density of 4.6 km2 (12/ sq mi).
